Test Drive Tips

Hand

When shopping for a used car, a test drive could ultimately make or break your purchase. You might love everything your desired vehicle has to offer, or you might come to find out that it has poor steering, uncomfortable blind spots, or other mechanical issues.

At our Buick GMC dealer in Las Cruces, we want you to make the most of your test driving experience. Before, during, and after your next test drive, keep these five tips in mind:

1.RUN A VEHICLE HISTORY REPORT

Before you take the vehicle for a spin, get to know its history. If the dealership doesn't already provide you with a history report on the car you're looking to buy, you can obtain one yourself through CarFax or AutoCheck. These reports will give you access to important information such as the number of owners, accidents, service history, and more.

2. EXAMINE THE CAR'S EXTERIOR

Turn the car on, then do a thorough walk-around to check for unusual noises or strong smells from the exhaust, and make sure all the lights are in working order. Inspect the exterior for dents, scratches, and if the paint is the same hue from panel to panel. If the paint's hue varies, that's a sign that the vehicle has been in an accident.

3. TEST OUT THE INTERIOR FEATURES

As you get inside the car, switch on the interior lights and see if all the dashboard lights are working. Test the radio, CD player, auxiliary jack, and any other technology features the car provides. You'll also want to turn on the heat and air conditioning, and make sure that the different HVAC modes work properly. Check the operation of all the power windows and door locks, as well as features like a power tailgate, sliding doors, and a moonroof.

4. MOST IMPORTANTLY, DRIVE THE CAR

As you're driving off the lot, pay close attention to how the vehicle runs by using your senses. Does the car make strange sounds as you accelerate, turn, or brake? Do you feel any vibration or pulling? With your eye on the instrument panel, are any gauges not operating properly or do any warning lights come on?

If you can, take the car down some bumpy roads and on the highway to make sure it can effectively drive on various road conditions and at higher speeds. It's important that you feel completely comfortable under different driving circumstances before you dish out the money to buy it.

5. GET THE CAR INSPECTED BY A MECHANIC

Even if the test drive goes well, and everything seems to be in working order, you should still get the vehicle checked out by a mechanic. A good technician can spot problems that you might not find, and that aren't on the vehicle history report.
